October at CORE is all about Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)! If you’ve been in or checked out our social media recently, you’ve probably heard about CORE’s Strongest Client competition. What better way to educate everyone on how FES cycling can benefit their health and wellness, and promote a phenomenal piece of equipment than throwing in a little friendly competition? Keep reading to learn more about how FES works and what it can do for you!

Your muscles work when neurons in your brain send minute electrical signals out. When a neuron is damaged, communication with the muscle is severed, and the signal can’t reach its destination. FES uses tiny, synthetic pulses of electrical energy to imitate what neurons do naturally. These signals are safely sent from an FES device to an electrode placed on the skin, through the electrode, down to the muscle. Once that signal reaches the muscle, it is allowed to contract and perform movement, and that is how FES works.

FES cycling provides a safe and practical way for weak or paralyzed muscles to experience passive resistive exercise. This can reduce muscle atrophy and spasms, improve local circulation, maintain or increase range of motion, and can further muscle re-education and neuroplasticity. Just 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week, for 3 months can significantly improve muscle mass, power output, work capacity, endurance, and much more. It’s also a great way to keep on top of your overall health and reduce risks of secondary complications that can be common in sedentary lifestyles.

Now that you know a little more about FES do you think you have what it takes to be CORE’s Strongest Client? The competition is designed to measure muscular endurance and maximum power output, and is open to any CORE client during their training sessions, or with a FIT membership. Even if you don’t come out on top, it’s a great opportunity to take advantage of the many perks that can come from using the FES cycle!
